One might equally say: farewell ±Û° °Û± legends - welcome to reality. For, after a voyage of over twenty ±Û° °Û± years' duration, DEINE LAKAIEN are ready to ditch all the old ±Û° °Û± ballast and every last cliché to present the most exciting album ±Û° °Û± of their entire career. ±Û° °Û± ±Û° °Û± Few bands have so polarised opinion over the last two and a half ±Û° °Û± decades as this duo, singer Alexander Veljanov and keyboard ±Û° °Û± player Ernst Horn: it's always been a straight case of love or ±Û° °Û± hate. Yet only a few notes of the opener suffice to recognise ±Û° °Û± that past judgements - good or bad - no longer hold true. Tired ±Û° °Û± categorizations are a thing of the past for this band. Having ±Û° °Û± laid aside their masks and stepped out from the shadow of their ±Û° °Û± history, the two dedicated performers are centred more clearly ±Û° °Û± than ever in their own selves - which is an open invitation to ±Û° °Û± listeners across the board to step into their world. ±Û° °Û± ±Û° °Û± It's exactly five years since Veljanov and Horn released their ±Û° °Û± last studio album "April Skies" but they haven't just been ±Û° °Û± twiddling their thumbs in the meantime. They celebrated their ±Û° °Û± twentieth anniversary with an opulent orchestral tour and ±Û° °Û± continue to pursue their long-standing tradition of acoustic ±Û° °Û± tours: opportunities enough for a little soul-searching. ±Û° °Û± ±Û° °Û± "Indicator" doesn't simply rehash tried and tested formulas. It ±Û° °Û± heralds a whole new era. Anyone who's always appreciated DEINE ±Û° °Û± LAKAIEN will find on this album a fine range of what the duo has ±Û° °Û± always done well. Both musicians have, after all, crammed tons ±Û° °Û± of experience into their tour luggage. One aspect is even more ±Û° °Û± important than their return to electronic sounds: DEINE LAKAIEN ±Û° °Û± now work to create intimacy with their listeners. They now have ±Û° °Û± courage enough for poetic simplicity of a kind they have rarely ±Û° °Û± attempted before. Their songs may still be highly emotional but ±Û° °Û± divested of any touch of pathos they sound refreshingly carefree ±Û° °Û± and light. ±Û° °Û± ±Û° °Û± In addition to political and social commentaries the album also ±Û° °Û± presents a few wonderful ballads and love songs. Yet DEINE ±Û° °Û± LAKAIEN place the heady heights of emotion in the context of ±Û° °Û± global developments. After 25 years they no longer want to wax ±Û° °Û± lyrical about the theme of all themes, like some dashing ±Û° °Û± romantics in the first boisterous throes of puberty. In terms ±Û° °Û± both of content and music, "Indicator" is a multifaceted, ±Û° °Û± intense album that embraces the world's diversity, dreams and ±Û° °Û± hopes, yet also relentlessly faces up to reality. The title ±Û° °Û± "Indicator" must be understood also in that light. DEINE ±Û° °Û± LAKAIEN consciously chose a no-nonsense motto, not only for the ±Û° °Û± listeners' sake but also for their own, and as a signpost on ±Û° °Û± their new path.
